Barmera is located 214 km to the North East of Adelaide and it is present on the sloping shores of Lake Bonney. Lake Bonney is an ideal place for swimming, water skiing, sailing, boating and fishing. Soldier settlement after world war I marked the start of the town.

10 km to the West of Barrmera there is Kingston on Murray there is Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre. 16 km to the North West there is Loch Luna Game Reserve. At Overland Corner situated at 19 km to the North West on Morgan Road there is a National Trust Museum. 5 km to the west of Barmera there is there is Irrigation and Steam Museum with only working Humphrey Pump. Moorook Game Reserve is located 16 km to the south west which includes Wachtels Lagoon with birdlife and waling trail.
