Birdwood was established by German settlers in 1848. Birdwood is in the northern part of the popular Adelaide Hills district. Birdwood is popularly known as the site of the largest motor museum in the southern hemisphere.

National Motor Museum is situated in Shannon Street, Birdwood and it was built in the year 1852. It has notable collection of vintage cars and motorcycles. Top of the Torrens Gallery in the same complex features changing exhibitions of local artists. German style cottages are also present in Shannon Street.

Motorcycle and Heritage Museum is located at Lobethal which is 13 km to the South West of Birdwood and has large collection of Vintage Machines. Fairyland village features characters from German fairytales. The Toy Factory is located 7 km to the west of Birdwood at Gumeracha and is home to giant rocking horse and offers displays and sales in nature park environment. Netherhill Strawberry Farm is located 11 km to the south west of Birdwood. Gorge Wildlife park is located 19 km to the West of Birdwood and has native wildlife in superb natural setting.
