Canberra is Australia 's capital city and is located in the only land-locked state or territory in Australia , appropriately named the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Situated in south-eastern New South Wales , the ACT comprises approximately 2,330 square kilometres and about 313,000 people. It is a purpose-built city, designed in a radial manner and has a short but interesting history and a very large lake named after the city's designer, Sir Walter Burleigh Griffin.

As the nation's capital, Canberra is home to the Houses of Parliament, the Australian High Court, the Australian War Memorial and Museum, and many colourful and interesting foreign embassies. Numerous tours are available of Canberra 's buildings, museums, gardens and other attractions, which can be taken by car, bus, bicycle, on foot or even on horseback!

Eating out in Canberra is a delight as the variety of restaurants and cafés is excellent. Entertainment abounds with theatres, cinemas, pubs, clubs and many live music venues, as well as a great selection of festivals, from floral art to hot air ballooning, throughout the year.

Accommodation is available to suit all tastes and budgets, including a range of quality hotels, motels, serviced apartments, bed and breakfasts and backpacker accommodation at very affordable rates. Be sure to book early though, especially when one of the world-renowned events, festivals or exhibitions is on.
