European settlement of Coonawarra goes back to 1890 when John Riddoch subdivided 2000 acres of his vast landholding for orchards and vine yards. The area`s terra rossa soil and dedicated viticulturalists and wine makers combine to produce award-winning white and red table wines.

Attractions in town
Art gallery at Chardonnay Lodge present on the Penola Road has some good art. In the month of November Cabernet Celebrations occur in Coonawarra. Demand for the wines produced in Coonawarra was not high until 1950`s and 1960`s yet wine industry was started in the late 1890`s.

Attractions in the area
Wineries are most open for tastings and sales from the north to south of Coonawarra. S.Kidman wines, Rymill Winery, Redman Wines, Brands Laira Wines, Wynns Coonawarra Estate, Rouge Homme Wines, Zema Estate, etc. There are huge numbers of wineries open in the town for tasting`s and inspection. Visitors can get more information from information centre located at 27 Arthur Street Penola.


Coonawarra Wineries – Wine region in the south east of South Australia famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon.  There are many wineries in this area with a cellar door. You can sample many local wines and stock up as well as buying fresh produce grown locally. There are several fine restaurants serving quality cuisine as well as local bakeries etc for a quick snack on the run.  Combine all this with various accommodation options and this area has much to offer.     Paula Duggan
