Cowell is a pleasant township located 108 km to the south of Whyalla. Cowell is located on the almost land locked Franklin Harbor. Oyster farming is a local industry and fresh oysters can be purchased year round. World`s largest deposits of Jade is in the district.

Old post office and attached residence is located on the Main Street and was built in the year 1888 which is now a Franklin Harbor National trust Historical Museum
. In the month of December Fireworks night and street party`s are organized.

Franklin Harbor Conservation Park is located to the south of town which has good fishing spots. Swimming and excellent fishing locations are abound which includes Gibbon point which is 15 km to the south of Cowell. Arno Bay is located 48 km to the south of Cowell and is a popular holiday town with sandy beaches and jetty for fishing. Council offices are located on the main street which provides information to the visitor.
