Karratha was established in the year 1968 on Nickol Bay as a result of expansion of the Hamersley iron project. Karratha grew further when Woodside petroleum developed an immense offshore gas reserve.

Karratha has some excellent views from TV Hill lookout located on the MillStream Road. In the month of June one can experience Pilbara Pursuit Jetboat Classic and in the months of August one can experience FeNaCLNG festival.

Jaburara Heritage trail features Aboriginal rock carvings and artifact scatters. 22 km to the north of Karratha at Dampier there is Hamersley Iron deepwater port. There are salt water harvest ponds near the port. There is also boat access to Dampier Archipelago for bushwalking, swimming, wild life watching and fishing. In the month of August Game Fishing classic is held near Dampier. North West Shelf Gas Project visitors centre is present 8 km North West of Karratha on Burrup Peninsula. 124 km to the south of Karratha Chichester Range Camel Trail and Millstream – Chichester National Park is present.
