Organ Pipes National Park

Experiences in Australia

Organ Pipes National Park is just 20 km north-west of Melbourne, just off the Calder Highway.
Facilities include a Visitors Centre and picnic area, as well as short walking tracks that will take you to Jackson’s Creek and the Organ Pipes rock features.

The Organ Pipes are vertical rock structures exposed by erosion around Jackson’s Creek.  They were formed over a million years ago by lava from surrounding volcanoes.  There are also fossils and sedimentary rocks in the park that indicate the area was once under water.  The creek provides cool respite on very hot days, and it has several deep pools that are home to platypus.  The area was established to attempt to return indigenous vegetation to the area, because much was lost due to urban expansion and farming.   The area is very popular with tourists because of the rock formations and also the native animals that have returned to the area: swamp wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos, echidnas, and sugar gliders can now be sighted almost daily at dawn or dusk.  Being so close to the city, the park is in the airport’s flight path, but that does not seem to affect the animals at all.
