Wilpena is located 429 km to the North of Adelaide. In the year 1902 the Hill family built a homestead inside the pound. The pound, part of the Flinders Ranges National Park is a vast natural amphitheatre surrounded by peaks which change color with the light. Entrance to this magnificent view is through a narrow gorge and across sliding rock.

Largest solar power system of the southern hemisphere is located in Wilpena. There are numerous walking trails in Wilpena Pound. Aboriginal rock carvings and paintings can be seen at Arkaroo Rock on the slopes of Rawnsley Bluff which is located 20 km to the South of Wilpena. These paitings are also located at Sacred Canyon which is located 19 km to the East of Wilpena. Demonstration of sheep drafting and shearing is conducted at Rawnsley Park Station which is located 20 km to the south of Wilpena on the Hawker Road. Stokes Hill Lookout is located 12 km to the North East of Wilpena. Wangarra Lookout is located 10 km to the South West of Wilpena.
