Wynyard

Experiences in Australia

As a quiet town of about 4800, Wynyard, Tasmania, is popular with tourists and retirees.  It is located on the northern coast about 66 km. northwest of Devonport.  Near Wynyard is a distinctive point that juts out into the ocean and resembles a large, flat table.  It is called Table Cape.  The town sits at the mouth of the Inglis River, where boating is a popular pastime.

Bloomin' Tulips Festival
The fields around Wynyard are known for growing lilies and tulips.  The tulips bloom around the end of September and the beginning of October.  The Table Cape Tulip Farm is only one of the many local farms that burst into color at this time of year.  The tulip season culminates with a festival day that includes art exhibits, yacht races, and more.

Fossil Bluff
Layers of fossil-laden rock can be seen exposed to the ocean at Fossil Bluff, which is located just east of Wynyard on Freestone Crescent.  Tourists need to visit at low tide in order to reach the base of the bluff.

Wytchbrooke Gardens
At Wytchbrook Gardens, visitors can stroll through five acres of gardens featuring rhododendrons and exotic shrubs, as well as lakes and streams.  The gardens are open on weekends from October to December when the rhododendrons are in bloom.  Wytchbrook Gardens is located just southwest of Wynyard in Lapoinya, on Lapoinya Road.
